How long has it been since a brother
who has not attended the Lodge for health or other reasons
had a visit from active Lodge members?
Put yourself in their shoes. Would
you like a visit from a Masonic brother if you were
unable to come to the lodge?
As Secretary of our lodge, I had an
occasion to seek the current address of a lodge brother
that the lodge had lost track of several years ago.
Not knowing where he lived or if he was still alive,
I checked the phone book and found two individuals with
his same last name. The first one I called was a lady
who said, "I do not know where he is, but you can
call XXX XXXX and he will know". I then called
the second individual. His wife answered and said no
he is not home but you can reach him at the XXXXX Store.
I called there and a young man answered the phone. I
told him I was the secretary of the local Masonic Lodge
and asked him if he knew this brother. He said Yes,
he is my grandfather and he lives here in town. He then
went on to say, "I want you to know that both my
grandfather and my father are Masons, and both were
Past Masters. Infact I have myself been wondering, how
do I become a Mason?"
I sent him some information as soon
as we got off the phone.
I then called the phone number he gave
me, and a middle-aged man answered. I told him I was
secretary of the lodge and asked him if XXX XXXX was
there? "Yes he is, but he cannot come to the phone
because he suffered a stroke last December and it left
him unable to speak. He can have visitors if you call
first so we can get him ready". He then went on
to say "Boy he sure has a lot of books on Masonry
in his room. I always admired him. How do I become a
Mason ?"
Here too, I sent him some information
soon after.
And thus, this search for an absent
member gained for our Lodge two new members.
Many men I know admire their Fathers
and Grandfathers and would like to be like them. Many
of these Fathers and Grandfathers are or were Masons.
Many men out there are wondering:- How do I become a
Mason?
Think about it brothers - our time
is coming and Masonic Lodges everywhere need replacements.
Let us not waste a valuable resource. Our long lost
brothers need a visit from us; masonry may be able to
gain from that which is not yet lost!
